I was contacted by the creators of Yummie Tummie awhile back and was thrilled with the project, How To Wear The Little Black Dress. Yummie Tummie started off with undergarments to shape our womanly figures and now, they’ve branched off by creating apparel with the shapewear built in. As you all know, I’m not a thin girl by any means and I’ve got lovely bumps and lumps all over this God-given body. I also know that a lot of readers appreciate that I realize this and dress for the body I have. The product of Yummie Tummie is perfect for someone like me who hasn’t quite achieved that “toned body” I’ve been wanting.

I’ve styled the Shelley Tank Dress a few different ways for a few different occasions. Now, I don’t normally dress in all kinds of tightness from top to bottom so wearing the dress alone is out of the question. However, it was the perfect shape to layer on a few pieces to develop a new look each time.

Shelley Tank Dress | thrifted Dana Buchman blazer | vintage elephant belt

This dress screamed classic-the length, the cut, the style and color, of course. I thought the most appropriate way to wear it was give it a retro, Jackie-O, Mrs. Obama type of dress. Because of the dress length, I felt that the points on the edge of the blazer would create a great peplum shape when belted. I placed the belt over the blazer and dress to define my waist. The good thing about this dress is that it smoothed all my lumps and bumps. I felt comfortable enough to show my derrière.

thrifted Liz Claiborne dress (worn vest-like) | Riki wool coat (gift) | Shelley tank dress | UO cat eye sunnies

I consider this something I’d wear on a date although I’ve most definitely been dateless for the past few months (laughing inside, really). I got this coat as a gift from my previous boss and it’s one of my favorites she’s made. It’s so warm and the pockets are deep. I wore the thrifted dress over the Shelley tank dress because it created color accents without completely changing the essence of the Shelley dress. I knotted the middle section of the thrifted dress to create a tight figure and also creating its’ own belt. Also, for the holidays, this could be great with a textured tight and a fur stole. I feel like the more you layer, the more holiday you get.

Shelley tank dress | thrifted skirt | Guess slingbacks | vintage elephant belt | Express leather jacket

This outfit is perfect for drinks with the girls. It’s got that sexy, edgy yet pulled together appeal that I like.  Because the leopard skirt is sheer, wearing a fitted shape underneath gives a great illusion that I have a tight little body underneath which indeed, I don’t. I wore the leopard skirt over it to separate the dress, creating a top and bottom. You can do that with any style skirt. If I had a short, A-line skirt to wear at my waist like here, I would have done that.

fur from LF | vintage Ralph Lauren belt | Shelley tank dress | American Apparel blouse | Jeffrey Campbell Lita boots | vintage scarf (worn as a head bow)

This is how I would rock this dress on the daily. Like I’ve said, I wouldn’t wear this dress on its’ own because it doesn’t suck in all my goodies. As you all know, I love sheer and adding the American Apparel blouse underneath, like you would a white button down under a sheath, is my interpretation of work, play and trendy-esque. I’ve got to say that I love the way it makes my bottom half look. I just wished it sucked in more of my tummy.

Pardon my language, but girl you’re fucking nuts! You may have amazing curves, but that doesn’t mean you’re not slim! You’ve got a banging body– own that shit!

This little number just proves it.

I am looooooving Ashe Mischief’s ever-so-truthful comment up there! GIRL. You rock whatever you wear and you look so womanly and gorgeous doing it. I think the Stella dress was made to hug your curves.

And uhmmmm I am seriously gawking at these ensembles. You put together some incred outfits that I am loving. Especially loving the scarf on your head in the last one and the whole damn fancy dress up look. What I love the most is your creativity with turning pieces like skirts into, I don’t know, scarves or vests, or whatever :)

LOVE every look you do here. Especially the “out and about” look and the “normal day wear”. I have never seen someone who gets such great use out of their closet. That thrifted leopard skirt has been transformed so many times and each of the looks you do with it is so creative and fun. I actually do not own a LBD which is so versatile (I know, don’t judge) it’s not that I don’t want one, I just can’t seem to find the right one. This post has give me new inspiration to start my hunt again. Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks Margot! I love having a diverse closet. It saves me so much money and it saves me from having to recycle out and replace with cheap crap. And I actually didn’t have a great LBD until this one. I love the way it fits me so this will be my definite go-to during the holidays!
I’m glad you’re going to continue the hunt. There’s the perfect one, somewhere!

    A) That dress is perfection. It totally helps with the “skinny looking” we were talking about. There’s also a corset on the site that I kind of really want even though I don’t wear corsets but might have to because I feel like it would make my boobs look great on a date.

Which leads me to my next point, B) I’ve been on 3 dates in the past 10 days with 2 different guys and all I could think of after each date was how much I wish I didn’t have to date. I just can’t stop saying yes to the question “do you want to get a drink [insert date & time]?”

And, C) The blazer. Oh, the blazer! I’m in love (p.s. if it would like to take me out on a date, I’d gladly accept)!

    • http://www.profreshstyle.com Profresh Style

Okay Chelsea Rae, you’re seriously my favorite commenter. AHAHAHAH. I laugh every time I read over this comment. So here we go:

A: Get it! I’m all down for undergarments no joke. It makes a nice, sexy silhouette that we didn’t realize we had. I don’t think it’s lying, in fact, I think guys should appreciate it. HAHA.

B: You are one lucky gal…although, I know that whole date thing. The amount of times I get asked to get a drink…really?! Can we come up with something creative. I think that’s why I haven’t dated. HAHA. No one is creative these days.

C: Dude, the blazer is amazing. $3.99 heyyyy holla. And yes, let’s get drinks. BWAHAHHA.

      • http://dearwinnie.com Chelsea Rae

Woot woot! I’m glad that I make someone laugh because I’m usually the only one laughing at my random comments. I was starting to think I was the only one who understands my meta-intellectual fangirl speak— it’s not my fault things make me excited and I then go off on tangents.

And that blazer was only $3.99!?!?!? The little thrifter inside of me just squealed in excitement and then became really jealous because I never find things like that, le sigh!

If we’re ever in the same city we need to go out and give all the guys heart attacks. I always find the stupid things they say, when there are multiple pretty girls (especially in skirts) around, really amusing. I always want to quote them on facebook, but that might get annoying so I resist the urge.

Curvy Girls Stand Up! You are rocking the hell out of that dress in every look! Love the juxtaposition of the lady-like look with the wildness of the leopard print! Beau-Ti-Ful!

This is such a great post – I tend to go simple with LBDs, and this just opened up my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.

Now, more importantly – if you have “lovely bumps and lumps” under that dress, I must have mountains and boulders under my clothing! You are just stunning.

I love the many stylings of your LBD! That elephant belt is an incredible piece! If you ever tire of it, please send it my way! I almost never wear LBDs, but you are making me re-think that.
